If there’s one thing Chicago has besides hot dogs, deep dish and a massive silver bean, it’s good music, and Horsegirl is just getting started. 

The Chicago trio composed of Nora Cheng (guitar and vocals), Penelope Lowenstein (guitar and vocals) and Gigi Reece (drums), dropped the album Versions of Modern Performance on June 3 via Matador Records. 

A Place to Bury Strangers (APTBS) builds a bridge between melancholic dread and fury on their album See Through You out today via Dedstrange Records. 

Power-duo Jade Alcantara and Grace Bennett formed the project Sub*t as a post-pandemic rise up with full-fledged, gritty 90s angst on their debut single “Boxing Day.” 

Iceage’s “Shelter Song” is shockingly tender, embodying a hugely 90s sound with mellow, chest-driven vocals — a stark contrast to the post-punk, experimental, psychedelic sound of the other two singles they released. 

Wolf Alice has been serenading listeners with dreamy indie rock since 2010. The four-piece London-based band dropped “The Last Man on Earth” in February 2021 as the first single for their album Blue Weekend that released in June 2021. 

Viagra Boys’ new album Welfare Jazz fuses elements of jazz, post-punk and folk in perfect harmony. The Stockholm, Sweden-based band is composed of jazz-gone-post-punk musicians unafraid to push the boundaries of modern alternative music.

Lily Bella, an elderly Shih-Tzu, fueled the inspiration for a day’s worth of social media posts at Traffic Advertising alongside Social Media Specialist Brooke Nolan. 

THE BULL WRITER 

Momma’s track “Rockstar” envelopes listeners in 90s bliss with supple vocals and heavy guitars. The track resembles artists like Juliana Hatfield, showing off heady, soft vocals that serve as a modern time capsule of older sounds. The satisfying power of good vocals and harmonies, combined with catchy, gritty riffs has had the track glued to my brain ever since I heard it. 

Baltimore band Turnstile has been revolutionizing hardcore the last decade, mastering the art of genre fusion and creating a sound entirely different from anything else in the scene. 

Berlin-via-Paris-via-Nigera experimental neo soul artist Wayne Snow gained popularity during the rise of the nu jazz scene in Berlin through his uniquely beautiful and haunting sound, drawing inspiration from artists like Sade, Sun Ra, and Fela Kuti. 

Pink Mexico’s Robert Preston Collum and long-time collaborator Mike Forst fused their talents in their latest project GUNK. They released the song “We’re on a Time Crunch Baby” as a music video on 1/17, teasing the style of their new album, GUTWAR.

Claud’s “Soft Spot” explores the world of young love and having a “soft spot” for a past partner regardless of heartbreak. 

LA-based musician Chloe Saavedra and Seattle based producer Zhone’s new project WTRGRL came into fruition during quarantine and burst onto the scene with “Party Alone”.

Since opening as a general store and selling bagels as a side-gig, Pete’s General expanded into a bagel shop and outgrew their small corner store in Uptown St. Petersburg.
